Session Description :

Archive readers: First, this was posted the day before this job went up.

I've received a missive from the Empress. She has a job for us, but we need to keep it quiet.

The Empress knows how the Merrish forces reached Leneruck. They have a tunnel, originating somewhere in l'Savane and reaching all the way to the western Roetwald. Princess Anathe and a few guild members discovered one of the exits to this tunnel in the course of our Roetwald Rebellion job. The Empress has tasked us with going to this tunnel, finding where it connects to whatever passage they're using for their supply lines, and collapsing it. She has enclosed a Wand of Digging (which she expects to be returned) to aid with navigation, and has provided griffons to help you get there.

She had one further instruction. If you happen to encounter any Chevalier, you are to take them alive and treat them with respect.

Payment is 4,000 gp, and you may keep whatever you capture from the Merrish.

Session Summary :

Session went pretty great overall. Everyone brought their A game in terms of RP.

The Squad: Adam on Silloun, Logan on Steph (who need I remind you is an actual literal vampire now), Jerry on Weyland, and Drew on Roku, Roku's horse, Roku's inner monologue, and also Chaka the Stable-Handed, who is now properly, mechanically, Roku's cohort.

The Mission: Using the tunnel that Princess Anathe and some other FGC members discovered during the Rötwald Rebellion arc, find the main tunnel the Merrish are using to bring troops and supplies into Terrisea, and collapse it. They were provided a 3 charge Wand of Digging to help with this endeavour. The Princess's favorite griffon, Kulik, knows where the cave entrance is, so off they go!

One wand charge was needed to clear the cave collapse and even enter the cave system. There was much off camera wandering, before the party encountered a Delver: a huge rock- and ore-eating slug-looking monster. It wasn’t aggressive, just cautious, and the PCs (wisely) decided not to start anything. Silloun flexed some talents to Divine for metals, and told the delver about a tasty looking ore seam “over there” and in thanks, the delver told them about some humans it saw “that way”. One of these days I'll have an optional murder hobo bait kinda fight and they'll actually go for it. But not today.

Later, they encountered three Umber Hulks, giant bug-ape hybrid looking dudes with a Confusing Gaze attack. Here we ran into a composition problem: no one played a proper front liner. One umber hulk waltzed right up to Silloun, downed him with a critical bite, and then took out his wisp with its claws. Silloun survived, but uh… see that wisp is his casting focus. And he can't replace it for 30 days or until he gains a level. Silloun started getting a little… unhinged. Generally grouchy, maybe a bit sloppy. The hulks had a fresh ish Merrish corpse in the nest that Silloun nibbled on (to read its memory) in full view of everyone. In the memory, this was one of a pair of scouts keeping an eye on the tunnel. This one broke off to check this branch, and got eaten. This got the PCs pointed towards their goal. The nest also contained a bit of loot (from various victims over time), and a pair of eggs. After much arguing, Silloun kept one of the umber hulk eggs and Steph "accidentally" broke the other.

Following the scout’s memory, they came upon the main tunnel. The Merrish did not carve a thousand mile long tunnel from l’Savane to the Roetwald, they used as many existing tunnels and caverns as they could. And as Steph stealthed his way into this one, he saw a small contingent of Merrish troops, with a wagon, a cannon, and a Red Chevalier mage talking with the other scout. They had decided that it would be best to close off the narrow tunnel that the other scout disappeared down, when the scout spotted Steph. The Chevalier mage won initiative, and used his Earth geomancing to bring the ceiling down behind Steph, and politely suggest that he surrender. Next move was Silloun, who used the second charge from the Wand of Digging to clear the blockage, while Steph stood with his back to the tunnel as the rubble flew past him and said "Mmmm, no, I don't think so." Then the next round, Silloun went a little nuts.

Being practically unable to use any of his magic, Silloun decided to charge the cart, and fire the wand of digging straight up. This took out the cannon, the sapper, and one soldier, but Sir Arbert got out of the way. So then everyone had to move up and cover their deranged wizard friend, and then Silloun popped a Potion of Ejection and noped out of the timestream for the rest of the fight.

Arbert eventually surrendered (as Steph turned his own phrasing against him), and Weyland had entirely too much fun rigging the tunnel to blow. Arbert was one of the people who created the tunnel, and has a map in his head. Empress Nailo has gotten herself a valuable prisoner…
